The Art Of Writing

Rediscover the joy of writing with creative writing exercises for children's authors by Ignite to Write featuring Jan Mader in Columbus, Ohio.

Writing is both skill and art.  Most importantly, writing can-and should-be fun.  Writing allows you to be creative and express your ideas, experiences, thoughts, and dreams.  Writing is also fundamental to success in many other career fields.

Anyone can learn to write but many students graduate from high school with rudimentary writing skills, at best.  Certainly, the fundamentals of grammar, sentence construction, and style are the foundation for good writing.  However, in this world of limited educational funding, crowded classrooms, and required testing, the fundamentals are often overemphasized, unintentionally squashing creativity and destroying all joy.  Good writing requires drive. Drive requires motivation.

The best motivation is fun...fun with words (vocabulary) and sounds (alliteration, rhymes), and mental images (adjectives and adverbs, metaphors and similes).  While working with “at-risk” public school students in reading and writing, I realized - and substantiated – that teaching kids how to have FUN with language was the best tool for helping them to read and write well.  And fun starts with the creative process.

Creativity is critical to all kinds of writing.  Learn how you can develop your creative skills and learn to write better!
